Thoughts for a Parent’s Heart

Standard

“Being a student of the heart is not a high value job in the world we live.”

via Thoughts for a Parent’s Heart.

True words quoted from a fellow blogger I follow. Perhaps it is why we are drawn to blogging…after conversing with children all day it is nice sometimes to reconnect with the bigger words again and elaborate on something in adult language. Whatever it is, I have met this blogger IRL and enjoy her writing immensely too. The bonus sometimes (like today) is finding a perspective that rings true for my life as well.

One thing is for sure, you are definitely not wasting your life my dear. If this is what God has called you to do then it is definitely not time wasted. It may not be valuable in the world we live but this world has it’s priorities a bit mixed up anyway. This was a worry I had too but every day I am reminded that it was the right decision for us as well and, at the end of the day, you can be a student in life or all your life but you can’t buy a degree for a position in your child’s life nor a career in heaven. So rock on with your bad self mama. Your degree may be collecting dust for now but you’re sparkling in the eyes and minds of those little ones. 🙂

Head in the Clouds

Standard

Fall gave way to winter last night. Not even into November and we were met with sleet and giant heavy snowflakes. The evening was topped off with a brief power outage. Fortunately that didn’t last very long. It was beautiful but I went to bed a little sad that fall may already be over. Then I woke up today to another beautiful sunny fall day. It’s the joke here in Cincinnati that the weather changes between all seasons in one day. Well, whatever season today may technically be classified as I am just grateful for the beauty of it. The sky today was one to remember.

What a beautiful day it was!

What a beautiful day it was!

The sky always amazes me. Sometimes I wonder if there is really anything more awesome than a sky full of infinitely rolling and perfectly plump clouds. The kind that are scattered across the sky and so thick  that their bottoms are flat and darkened from their weight against our atmosphere. Like the clouds we used to draw as children.

Love the big fluffy clouds

Love the big fluffy clouds

I love days like that where they seem to stretch on to forever. I wonder if there could be a more perfect sky.

Love when the clouds roll on to forever

Love when the clouds roll on to forever

But then there will be a day where even faint wispy clouds across a pink streaked sunset will capture me just the same;

Love those cotton candy sunsets

A beautiful whispy pink moonrise

Or storm clouds that seem to bring out the colors of the trees with rays of sun peeking through as they roll along.

The sky over the ocean is something magic

When was the last time you stopped to enjoy it?

Giant storm clouds are scary beautiful

They all make other totally different but equally beautiful scenes.

Full moon beauty

The sky today is never the same as any one prior and and never again will be repeated. Every single day a brand new masterpiece. Do you ever take a minute to soak it in and enjoy it?

Hay & High

Hay & High

There is so little infiniteness anymore. I remember looking at the Grand Canyon the same way and being thankful for its gorged but gorgeous grounds that at least we can be assured it won’t become a new housing development…anytime soon anyway. Don’t get me wrong, I love the random beauty you can find along the beaten path like old city charm but it lacks the unending reach that challenges your brain to even try to conceive its greatness. Even the Grand Canyon, though overwhelmingly big, is no match against the sky and its never-ending canvas.

Highway clouds - even with the road and cars it's still amazing

Highway clouds – even with the road and cars it’s still amazing

Whether clear blue, star kissed, pink and purple streaked, angry gray or peaceful fluffy white, it’s vast, everlasting, eternal, boundless, immeasurable, amazing.

Every sky a new masterpiece

Every sky a new masterpiece

For all the craziness this world has to offer down here it’s nice to still find peace above. We are so caught up in the daily ho-hum of everything that I think it’s easy to forget sometimes what a naturally beautiful planet we live on. It’s as if we’re in some sort of competition with ourselves to see how fast we can cover every square inch of this place with new buildings and big housing developments. (As if there’s not enough vacant ones in neighborhoods all over the country already). And sometimes we can be so intermingled in the excitement here at our feet that we forget to let our head in the clouds once in a while and just breathe.

Blazing sunset

Blazing sunset

Even with the crowded roadways before me, I always loved driving home from work into a new sunset every evening and sunrise every morning on my way in to the office. Now that I’m not making that commute anymore I love watching the sun break the dawn through my kitchen window and especially love those moments when we retreat and can enjoy a sky uninterrupted by anything but nature. During these times I am reminded of how we spend so much time looking around when really we should just simply be looking up…

Open road, open sky

Open road, open sky

…And how, incidentally, that applies in more ways than one.

Have a great weekend everyone! Make it count!

First Frost & Fried Green Tomatoes

Standard

The weather men keep announcing it in their cynical way: “The frost is coming”.

We have been enjoying some terrific fall weather with overnight temps perfect for snuggling and mornings with big comfy socks and warm mugs. I love this weather. It’s good for jeans and sweaters…It’s good to bust out your favorite boots…It’s good for working outside…But it’s not so good for all the remaining veggies in the garden. The freezing temps mean it’s time to gather up whatever remains of the garden before it is bitten and claimed by the frost.

We didn’t get the turn out we had hoped to get in our new garden thanks to some adorable but hungry pests and getting a late start but, aside from an abundance of cucumbers over the summer, we did get some good late fruits of labor from our tomatoes, broccoli, zucchini, squash and eggplant. We unearthed our carrots over the weekend and I have just finished rounding up the last of our tomatoes – several of which were still green. But that’s fine by me because I’m thinking fried green tomatoes will make a delicious accompaniment to our salmon tonight. 🙂

Freezing temps coming this week. Just snagged the last of our garden before the frost claims it. I'm thinking fried green tomatoes will go nicely with our salmon :)

Fall in Full Swing

Standard

It was a fall celebration this weekend in our house. We started off by making some fun crafts with Adri and her cousin. Because the only thing that’s better than seasonal crafting is seasonal crafting with baby hands and feet. 🙂

Boo! Crafting with baby feet. :)

They were creeptastically cute…

Eek! Crafting with 9 month old curious baby hands - a little more complex.

And it wouldn’t be fall without homemade caramel apples and apple cider!

Mmmm....Delicious sticky crisp goodness

Our crafting took a little longer than expected so the pumpkin painting and carving had to be rescheduled. I’m still on the fence with how I wanted to decorate my little tulip’s first jack-o-lantern anyway so that’ll give me a few more days to mull it over.

After a successful day of fall crafting Saturday I felt kitchen ambitious Sunday and determined to shatter my baking fear. For anyone that knows me knows that my cooking style is not very “technical”. I rarely follow any exact recipes and so baking has never been an area I’m very comfortable in because of the whole “baking is a science” thing. The only pie I’ve ever made other than no-bakes is pumpkin. To finish the weekend off I wanted to prove to myself that I could bake something amazing from scratch and also something that tasted like the fall. I had some extra pumpkin from the pie I made last week and decided pumpkin muffins sounded good. Well let me tell you, there were good. They were Tony the Tiger “Greeeeat” in fact. Then I kicked their tastiness up a notch and added a spiced apple cream cheese filling and an apple cider glaze. Delicious I tell ya! I even made them wearing a handmade apron. Yeah, I’m pretty sure Martha Stewart would be proud. 🙂 I had to send a dish of them with The Hub to work today because the only downside to having 3 dozen of these things in the house is that he and I would binge on them until every last crumb was gone and, well, that just would be counterproductive to our weight loss progress now wouldn’t it?

A cupcake without icing is a muffin and muffins are healthy. You're welcome. :)

Yes, the season is in full swing. The leaves are changing and falling from the trees. The weather forecast says the overnight freezing temps are only days away. It’s a beautiful day though. The birds sound especially happy singing in the trees this morning; Celebrating the sun. They must know the frost is coming this week.

Enjoy your week everyone!

Prayers for Peterson

You just can’t listen to any media outlet without hearing something horrible anymore. My thoughts and prayers going out to Peterson and his family. I can’t imagine even having to live through something like this.

This world needs a healing that a bandaid or a prescription simply can’t fix.

Happy Birthday Opa

Standard

I could think of a million things my world is missing without you if it weren’t for all the wonderful things you brought my life while you were here. Thank you for all that you did and all you still do. You always said there was no distance that could keep you away. Losing you here on earth has only taught me the depth of that promise. I love you so much. ❤️

You couldn’t have asked for a better day to send some birthday balloons up to heaven. The sky was so clear you nearly could see them reach the gate.

Happy Birthday Opa. ❤️

Happy Birthday Opa

Opa was the type that always wanted to celebrate life so it was good to take a minute to celebrate his today with joy and not sorrow. I had a great breakfast with family and we all got a big laugh watching the kids participate in releasing their balloons. One of the funniest moments of the day was when my two year old nephew decided he wanted to throw more to Opa in heaven and started heaving pumpkins toward the sky. I’m pretty sure Opa got a chuckle from it all too.

The Luckiest Mum

Standard

My baby is 9 months old. NINE months old. I can’t believe it but it’s true and one year is right around the corner. We spent the day putting up the fall decorations. Well, she spent it being absolutely adorable and rocking in her little rocking chair while I put up the decorations. Instead of cake she had the baked cauliflower dish I made with dinner and didn’t mind a bit. In fact, she loved it. I sat there for over an hour while she fed herself and yelled for more when she cleared her tray. It was just like the salmon we had the other night that she couldn’t get enough of. She’s the funniest little thing to me. And just so big. There are no words for the joy this child brings into my life every single day and how watching her grow pulls on my heartstrings.

My Little Tulip I'm such a lucky mum ;)

The Grocery Gimp

Standard
But not on this day!

But not on this day!

Haha. And it’s true. It’s like a contest I have with myself every time. I know I only have a small window to get all the groceries in before the baby wakes up and goes apeshit so there I am gimping to the door, carrying thirty bags at once and risking near loss of limbs to blood supply cutoff. Anyone else?
